Date : 11 July 2009
6-red World GP: White, Hawkins In Final

Jimmy White, the peoples' champion magnetic as ever even in his late 40s, won his first title crack in ages when he upset Mark J. Williams 7-4 in the semifinals of the SangSom World Grand Prix 2009.

White, always a crowd favourite in Thailand, faces in-form Barry Hawkins who gunned down flamboyant Judd Trump 7-2 in the second semifinal late on July 11 evening.

White, who had an encouraging run on the World Snooker professional circuit last season, had produced impressive results on his way to the semifinals.

He started his march with a stunning 6-4 victory over former world professional champion Shaun Murphy in the last 32 stage and then sent defending champion and world No. 20 Ricky Walden packing following a 6-5 win.

White, a three times former world professional championship runner-up and No. 2 who is now down to the 56th spot, edged world No. 16 Mark King, the top performer in the first round, 7-6 on July 11 morning.

The star performer of the day was the world No. 30 Trump who continued his swashbuckling show in the tournament with a fantastic 7-2 victory over the reigning world champion John Higgins in the quarter-finals.

The day was not a good one for the hosts, as their top two protagonists were axed in the quarter-finals.

Issara Kachaiwong, who had set the stage alight by edging last year's runner-up Stuart Bingham 6-5 in a spine-chilling finish on July 10 night, was the first bow out in the quarter-finals.

Issara was almost flawless and hardly did anything that could be blamed for his 7-5 defeat at the hands of Williams.

He said: "It was one of those days when you everything right but still end up on the wrong end. It was my best performance of the tournament, but I would say Williams was still the better player."

Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm soon followed after going down 7-5 to Hawkins, the world No. 17.

The winner of the final on July 12 night will take home a purse of one million baht while the runner-up will receive 500,000 baht.

The final at the same venue will get underway at 10:30 pm and will be televised live by Modern Nine and True Sport 3 channels simultaneously.
