Suphan Buri Cup: Thepchaiya Impressive

Thepchaiya Un-nooh used flamboyance to subdue veteran Thawat Sujaritthurakarn's stubborn resistance and march into the quarter-finals of the SangSom Suphan Buri Cup 2009.

In other matches at the Patchara Hotel, English world No. 24 Michael Holt defeated Somporn Kunthawung 4-1 and Passakorn Suwannawat edged young Yuttapob Pakpoj 4-3 after recovering from the brink of defeat. Holt and Passakorn clash in the quarter-finals on May 27.

Earlier on May 24 night, India's Aditya Mehta, runner-up of the 2008 Asian Championship, had trouble in controlling the cue ball around the green baize and suffered a shock 4-0 defeat at the hands of Suchakree Poomjaeng, a former world under-21 championship runner-up who is on a comeback trail.

Thepchaiya, a talented cueist who surged to the limelight by scoring the first and only 147-point maximum break of the Thailand Ranking Circuit last year, continues to have an impressive run.

The tall and lanky player from Nakhon Nayok took the world amateur title in Austria in November last year and recently won the seventh event of the highly-competitive Pontins International Open Series in Wales.

Thepchaiya started off well on May 25 afternoon with a break of 72 points that gave him the first frame before Thawat levelled the frame score by stealing the second frame on the black ball.

Thepchaiya then impressed a large local crowd with an impressive break of 119 points in the third to inch ahead again. After consolidating his lead to 3-1, he relaxed a bit that cost him the fifth frame but he was soon back to his best to wrap up the match 4-2.

Thepchaiya's opponent in May 27 quarter-finals will be winner of May 25 night last 16 round contest between Noppadol Sangnil and Praprut Chaithanasakun.

The four remaining matches of the last 16 round will be played on May 26 with the first session starting at 11 am at the same venue.
