Asian C'ship: Lai Produces Another Shock

Lai Chee Wei of Malaysia delivered another major upset, hammering top Chinese contender Tian Pengfei 4-1 in their 2009 Asian Championship Group D clash.

This was the second shock of the group produced by Lai Chee Wei, who earlier defeated former world championship runner-up Saleh Mohammed 4-3, representing Afghanistan at the Championship.

The May 5 upshot of the match against Tian Pengfei, who scored a break of 133 points on the opening day, has turned the Group D into a three-player horse, with all Lai Chee Wei, Tian Pengfei and Saleh being in with a chance of making it to the next round.

At the end of the group stage matches, top players from each group will qualify for the last 16 round knockout stage in Tangshan, China.

Mohammed Mustafa Shehab of the United Arab Emirates won his second match in Group H and now looks likely to move to the next stage of the tournament.

His compatriot Mohammed Al Joakar is also doing well in Group A with three wins and a loss. The group table is being topped by last year’s runner-up Aditya Mehta of India, the top seeded contender.

From Group B, Yu Delu of China and Lim Chun Kiat of Singapore are now certain to qualify for the last 16 rounds, and so are Issara Kachaiwong of Thailand and Manan Chandra of India in Group C.

Mohammed Asif of Pakistan has topped the Group E standings with Cao Xinlong of the host country in the second place.

Fung Kwok Wai of Hong Kong China and Mei Xiwen of China have also been assured to second round berths from Group F.
